'Ala al-Din II, Bahmani

'Ala al-Din II, Bahmani
(?-1378)
'Ala al-Din II Bahmani was known during his princehood days as Mujahid. On the death of his father, Muhammad Shah Bahmani, in 1375 Mujahid became the sultan. During the whole of his short reign (1375-1378), 'Ala al-Din II was engrossed in a fierce war with Vijayanagar, which was precipitated by Bukka's demand on the new sultan to hand over to him the Raichur Doab. An invasion of Vijayanagar by 'Ala al-Din was countered by Bukka by resorting to dispersed resistance. Eventually, 'Ala al-Din was forced to withdraw, fighting his way back. The Bahmani forces were badly mauled in a pitched battle fought close to Vijayanagar. During his retreat, the sultan was assassinated by his cousin Daud on 16 April 1378.
